31-10-2023 (BEIJING) A wedding banquet held at a luxurious hotel in Wuhan, China, has become a topic of heated online discussion after it was revealed that each guest was served a simple boxed lunch, and nothing more.
A video capturing wedding guests partaking in their pre-packed meals was posted on Chinese media by an attendee last Friday (Oct 27). In the viral footage, guests could be seen eating their meals while trying to stifle their laughter.
The pictures of the boxed lunches revealed a meal consisting of one meat dish, two types of vegetables, and a fried egg. Some of the older guests in attendance appeared somewhat puzzled by the unconventional wedding feast.
One amused guest wrote, “Attending a wedding banquet and being served a boxed lunch, it’s the first time I’ve experienced something like this.”
Is it a cost-saving measure or a local tradition? The video has since gone viral on social media, with netizens expressing a range of opinions regarding the unconventional wedding meal.
Some disapproved of the choice, with one comment stating, “Even if you want to save money, you can’t do this.”
Another netizen remarked, “This will be a topic of conversation for a lifetime.”
Despite the critics, one netizen offered an explanation, pointing out that serving boxed lunches at weddings is a common practice in certain regions of China.
“It’s a local tradition. At present, many banquets in urban areas and some rural villages in China feature a single main meal, typically in the afternoon or evening. However, a few close relatives and friends usually arrive early to help or engage in activities like mahjong, so these boxed meals are provided before the main banquet,” clarified the netizen, who urged others not to make a big issue out of the situation.
