5-12-2024 (SINGAPORE) Singapore has secured its maiden position among the world’s top 10 most visited cities, according to the latest Global Top 100 Cities Tourism Destination Index published by Euromonitor International.
The prestigious annual rankings, unveiled yesterday, saw the French capital Paris maintain its dominance at the summit, attracting more than 17 million international visitors. The City of Light’s enduring appeal continues to outshine its global competitors, with Spain’s Madrid claiming the second spot, followed by Tokyo, which rounded out the top three.
The comprehensive assessment, which evaluated 100 metropolitan destinations across 55 distinct metrics, revealed a particularly strong showing from European cities, with Rome and Milan securing fourth and fifth positions respectively. The United States’ sole representative in the upper echelons, New York City, claimed sixth place, whilst Amsterdam and Sydney occupied seventh and eighth spots.
Singapore’s breakthrough ninth-place ranking marks a significant milestone for the Southeast Asian hub, which has consistently demonstrated robust economic performance since the index’s inception. The city-state, renowned for its business-friendly environment and status as one of the world’s freest economies, edged out Barcelona, which completed the top 10.
The index’s methodology encompasses six crucial parameters: economic and business performance, tourism metrics, infrastructure, policy framework and attractiveness, health and safety protocols, and sustainability initiatives. Each city receives a composite score based on their performance across these categories.
