9-10-2024 (SINGAPORE) Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol have agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership next year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The announcement came during President Yoon’s state visit to Singapore, which concludes on Wednesday before he departs for the ASEAN summit in Laos. The planned strategic partnership aims to establish a comprehensive roadmap for deepening cooperation across various forward-looking sectors, promising tangible benefits for citizens and businesses of both countries.
During their talks, Prime Minister Wong and President Yoon explored avenues to expand collaboration in crucial areas such as trade and investment, air connectivity, defence, and education. The leaders also engaged in discussions on regional and international developments, emphasising the importance of constructive dialogue to foster peace, stability, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.
The timing of this diplomatic upgrade is particularly significant, as 2024 not only marks half a century of Singapore-South Korea relations but also the 35th anniversary of dialogue relations between ASEAN and South Korea. Both leaders recognised the potential for enhanced cooperation between ASEAN and South Korea, particularly in trade and the digital economy.
Underscoring the multifaceted nature of their partnership, the two leaders witnessed the signing of an extradition treaty and the exchange of five Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and agreements. These documents cover a wide range of areas including supply chain resilience, food safety, energy, start-ups, and technology, setting a positive tone for expanded bilateral cooperation as the countries progress towards their strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Wong, in a social media post, highlighted the commonalities between Singapore and South Korea, referring to their shared experiences as ‘Asian Tigers’ that successfully transformed their economies. He noted South Korea’s impressive scale of innovation and cultural influence, suggesting that these shared experiences make the two nations “natural partners”.
The state visit also saw President Yoon meeting with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. These high-level engagements affirmed the strengthening economic relationship and deepening people-to-people ties between the two countries. President Tharman welcomed South Korea’s emerging role as a responsible middle power and its increasing engagement with ASEAN.
In their meeting, Senior Minister Lee and President Yoon found common ground in supporting the multilateral trading system and the rules-based international order. They also acknowledged the potential for increased collaboration between ASEAN and South Korea in areas such as trade, connectivity, digitalisation, food security, and green transition.
