20-9-2023 (BEIJING) A 32-year-old woman in China developed osteoporosis due to excessive use of sunscreen, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach to sun protection. The woman, known as Ms. Lu, woke up one night coughing and later discovered she had broken a rib. Upon seeking medical attention, she was diagnosed not only with a rib fracture but also osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis, a bone disease often associated with calcium deficiency, typically affects middle-aged and elderly individuals. However, Ms. Lu’s condition was unusual due to her age. Calcium absorption in the body relies on an adequate supply of vitamin D. In Ms. Lu’s case, her test results showed extremely low levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in her blood.
Further investigation by the doctor, believed to be from Hangzhou Third People’s Hospital, revealed that Ms. Lu was exceptionally cautious about sun exposure. She consistently used a complete set of sun protection equipment, including sunscreen, a sun protection hat, and sun protection clothing.
The doctor emphasized the importance of vitamin D obtained from sunlight, with up to 90% of the body’s requirements being met through sun exposure. Humans typically need around 30 minutes of sunlight daily to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. Insufficient exposure to sunlight over time can lead to the development of conditions like osteoporosis, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to sun protection.
