10-7-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The front gates of police stations across Malaysia will be closed from 10 pm as part of enhanced security measures following the deadly attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor, announced Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in Parliament.
Addressing the legislative body, Saifuddin stated that several key measures have been implemented to tighten security at police stations, with consideration given to both the needs of the public and the safety of on-duty police officers.
“In response to the incident at the Ulu Tiram police station, the immediate action of the police is to tighten the standard operating procedures for all district police headquarters areas, police stations, and main police premises under administrative orders to improve several directives,” Saifuddin explained.
He further elaborated, “Following the same issue, the administrative directive of the permanent order of the Inspector-General of Police also includes that police stations will be closed after 10 pm. We have to balance the role of the police station as a place for the public to lodge complaints and, at the same time, police stations are also targets. Therefore, we need to balance both.”
The minister’s remarks were in response to a parliamentary question regarding additional measures taken to enhance security at police stations in the wake of the Ulu Tiram incident, which occurred on May 17. In the tragic attack, two police officers lost their lives, while another sustained gunshot wounds to the shoulder and hip.
