18-3-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The infrastructure for a 140km/h electric train service in Johor Bahru (JB) may be completed by the end of 2024, according to Malaysia’s Transport Minister. The announcement was made by Anthony Loke, who also stated that the government would not invest in the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project if it is reintroduced.
The extension of the JB electric train route from Gemas in Negeri Sembilan to JB is expected to be finished by April 2025. Currently, the KTM Electric Train Service (ETS) runs from Padang Besar in Perlis, near the Malaysian border with Thailand, to Gemas. Once the southern extension is completed, the line will connect to JB, which is in close proximity to Singapore.
Minister Loke provided an update on the progress of the Gemas-Johor Bahru Twin Track project, stating that it is estimated to be completed on April 21, 2025. He also mentioned that the Railway Asset Corporation is working to acquire new electric train sets on lease, which will be used for KTM Komuter services in the southern sector.
The ETS trains are capable of traveling up to 140 km/h on an electrified meter gauge rail line, classifying them as a Higher Speed Rail train service. In light of the infrastructure development, the government has procured 10 new electric train sets that will be gradually utilized from the end of this year to support ETS operations in the southern sector.
Minister Loke revealed that the Johor government has proposed additional stations, particularly between Kempas and JB. He emphasized the potential for cooperation with the private sector, where developers could build station facilities as part of housing projects, adding value to the overall development. He cited the example of Segambut station to support his case.
If the project stays on schedule, the infrastructure completion by the end of 2024 will enable the extension of the ETS to Johor Bahru Station. Currently, the service terminates at Gemas Station with a stop at Kuala Lumpur (KL).
In regards to the potential revival of the KL-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project, Minister Loke explained that MyHSR Corp had submitted a preliminary report of the proposal paper to the Transport Monitory. The Ministry of Transport will present the report to the Cabinet for approval. He also emphasized the government’s intention not to finance the project, instead seeking private sector financing. The Cabinet’s decision will take into account the financial implications for the government.
The completion of the JB electric train infrastructure and the extension of the ETS service to Johor Bahru will contribute to improving transportation connectivity in the region and enhance the efficiency of travel for residents and visitors.
