28-11-2023 (MANILA) Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna delivered the sad news on Tuesday of the passing of Vishwa Ma’ali, affectionately known as Mali, the nearly 50-year-old elephant residing at the city’s zoo.
In a heartfelt video message posted on Facebook, Mayor Lacuna expressed her condolences to her fellow ManileƱos and fellow Filipinos, announcing the demise of the cherished Mali. The elephant passed away at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, surrounded by Roland Marino, the officer-in-charge of the Manila Public Recreations Bureau, Senior Veterinarian Dr. Heinrich Patrick “Chip” Pena-Domingo, and Mali’s caretakers, Noel and Boy.
At this time, the cause of Mali’s death remains unknown, as the city government awaits the results of the necropsy, which will provide further information on the circumstances surrounding her passing. Mayor Lacuna assured the public that they will be updated on the true cause of Mali’s demise during a press conference scheduled for the following day.
Mali had been a beloved figure in the Manila Zoo for many years, captivating visitors with her gentle nature and unique presence. Her passing marks the end of an era and leaves a void in the hearts of those who had the opportunity to witness her grace and beauty.
