11-6-2023 (SINGAPORE) In a bid to assure residents following his decision to leave politics, Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam stressed on Sunday (Jun 11) that Jurong GRC will remain in “good hands” despite his impending departure.
Mr Tharman, who said it is “important for me” to contest the upcoming Presidential Election, explained that he would “much rather win or lose with a contest”. His instinct as an athlete is to thrive in competitions, he added.
While no other candidates have emerged yet, political observers suggest billionaire George Goh could join the fray. Madam Halimah Yacob won uncontested in the 2017 race after other candidates failed to qualify.
Mr Tharman clarified that his football analogy on Thursday referred only to his defensive mindset, not allegiance. “I’m not on the same team as the government once I become president,” he stressed.
He declined further comment on his presidential bid, focusing instead on current duties. He must quit as an MP and minister by Jul 7 to contest the election, which must be held by Sep 13.
At the opening of ActiveSG Sport Village @ Jurong Town, Mr Tharman assured residents he met that “Jurong will be okay”. His fellow MPs are “exceptional” and have “character”, he said, praising them.
Observers noted Jurong GRC may lack an “anchor minister” without Mr Tharman. By-elections are not required if an MP resigns.
While some residents were sad to see him go, others wished him well in the presidential race.
Mr Tharman, who also informed Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of his decision, said he plans to resign from the People’s Action Party after stepping down from all government positions.
His run for president comes after Madam Halimah said she will not seek re-election, with her term ending in September.
