20-1-2025 (SINGAPORE) CCTV footage revealed a domestic helper’s violent treatment of an elderly couple, prompting police investigation and leaving a family devastated.
The distressing incident came to attention when a 91-year-old man sought medical treatment at Central Hospital for unexplained injuries to his left foot on 4 January. What began as a routine medical examination would soon uncover a disturbing pattern of abuse in the Henderson Crescent flat where he resided with his 90-year-old wife.
The couple’s daughter, Ms Huang, 63, made the heart-wrenching discovery upon reviewing home security footage. The recordings exposed multiple instances of abuse perpetrated by their Myanmar-national helper, identified only as Kaya, 40, who had been employed to care for the elderly pair since October 2024.
Particularly disturbing footage from 3 January shows an unprovoked attack in the living room, where the caregiver allegedly grabbed the 90-year-old woman by the throat and violently shook her before dragging her into another room, despite the elderly woman’s evident distress and screams.
The situation deteriorated further that evening when, at approximately 22:22, the elderly man suffered a fall. Rather than rendering assistance, the helper allegedly ignored his plight. The footage then shows the helper returning to physically assault the elderly woman again, allegedly strangling her, covering her mouth, and forcibly throwing her onto a sofa—all while her husband remained helpless on the floor.
“We discovered bruising on my mother’s chin and limbs, which we now suspect resulted from the violent manhandling,” Ms Huang told reporters, visibly emotional during the interview. The family immediately reported the incident to authorities and dismissed the helper.
The elderly woman was subsequently taken to hospital for medical examination. Singapore Police Force has confirmed they are actively investigating the case.
