5-7-2024 (TAIPEI) Taiwanese authorities have successfully repatriated 11 wanted fugitives from Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the fight against transnational crime. The arrests were part of a larger crackdown by Indonesian immigration authorities on Taiwan nationals involved in online criminal activities and immigration violations.
The 11 individuals, comprising 10 men and 1 woman, were among 102 Taiwanese nationals apprehended by the Indonesian immigration authorities in Bali towards the end of June. They faced charges ranging from fraud and money laundering to violations of immigration laws.
Acting swiftly, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Taiwan initiated a cross-border cooperation mechanism with their Indonesian counterparts, dispatching officers to facilitate the extradition process. The fugitives, under the close supervision of CIB’s International Affairs Corps officers, arrived in Taiwan late last night (4th).
Upon their arrival, the group was promptly transferred to various local district prosecutors’ offices for further legal proceedings. Notably, 6 of the 11 fugitives were wanted on “Zhi” warrants issued by the Taiwan High Prosecutors’ Office in Taichung, which will spearhead the investigation into these cases.
The Taichung District Prosecutors’ Office confirmed that the 11 wanted individuals hailed from various parts of Taiwan. To ensure a thorough and organized process, the authorities will conduct a comprehensive assessment and verification before transferring each case to the respective prosecutors’ offices responsible for the original warrants.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Taichung District Prosecutors’ Office refrained from conducting night interrogations upon the group’s arrival. Instead, questioning commenced early this morning, with plans to present the suspects before the court later today.
