20-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) Approximately 800 soldiers from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the United States Army recently engaged in the annual war games known as Exercise Lightning Strike. The exercises took place at the National Training Center in California from September 2 to September 17, as announced by the Singapore Ministry of Defence (Mindef).
Exercise Lightning Strike, which was first held in 1996, serves as a platform for both armies to exchange tactics, techniques, and procedures. It fosters cooperation and underscores the strong relationship between the Singapore and US armies.
During the exercises, Singaporean soldiers honed their skills in light and motorized warfare, training alongside their US counterparts in the US Stryker Combat Vehicles. Additionally, SAF soldiers participated as observers in a combined arms brigade planning exercise.
3rd Infantry Battalion Commander Fan Mun Poh, who visited the troops during the exercise, emphasized the importance of Exercise Lightning Strike in facilitating professional exchanges and the sharing of tactics between the two armies.
The Mindef statement highlighted the extensive interaction between the Singapore and US armies, including exercises, professional exchanges, and attendance at courses in each other’s countries. These interactions have not only enhanced the professionalism and personal rapport between the armed forces but have also reaffirmed the longstanding and excellent defence relations between Singapore and the US.
