26-10-2023 (BANGKOK) Thai Airways International (THAI) unveiled its striking new uniform for female cabin crew on Wednesday, blending Thai identity with a commitment to sustainable development. Set to debut on January 1, 2024, the transformation of THAI’s iconic Thai Ruean Ton uniform reflects the airline’s dedication to environmental responsibility through the use of recycled materials and Thai silk.
Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri expressed THAI’s determination to reduce its environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions. “We are proud to introduce projects like ‘From Planes to Planet,’ ‘From Waste to Wealth,’ and ‘From Purple to Purpose’ as part of our ‘Zero Waste Living’ approach, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050,” he stated. In line with the circular economy principles, THAI plans to recycle plastic water bottles used on flights into materials for the new uniform, which will consist of 70% plastic fiber and 30% silk.
The new uniform not only enhances aesthetics but also prioritizes practicality, easy maintenance, and adherence to safety standards, according to Chai.
THAI aims to fully transition its approximately 2,100 female cabin crew members to the new uniform by the end of 2024. With an average of 120 daily flights, the national flag carrier relies on a dedicated team of 600 to 700 female cabin crew members who will soon showcase the sustainable style.
In addition to its uniform initiative, THAI has undertaken various sustainable practices, including fuel-efficient improvements and the introduction of new-generation aircraft. The airline is actively incorporating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and extending sustainability efforts to non-aviation activities such as catering, technical services, and ground services.
