13-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) A Taiwanese man went to great lengths to confront his ex-girlfriend in Singapore after she relocated for work. He engaged in disturbing stalking behavior, including showing up unannounced multiple times, and even bringing a taser with him.
According to the Straits Times (ST), the 30-year-old man, who is currently unemployed, had met the Taiwanese woman while they were both in Taiwan, and they began their relationship in July 2021. However, in February 2023, the woman found a job opportunity in Singapore and decided to move to the city-state.
Despite the geographical distance, the man frequently visited her while they were still in a relationship. But their romance came to an end in June 2023.
Following the breakup, the man relentlessly attempted to contact the woman, resorting to traveling from Taiwan to Singapore to meet and communicate with her. He would appear unannounced near her workplace and home, causing significant distress.
The situation escalated when, on July 5, the woman received a message from the man, claiming he was waiting for her near her residence. Although initially skeptical that he was in Singapore, the man accurately described the woman’s attire on that day. He also showed up outside her workplace’s training center.
A week later, he confronted the woman in the lobby of her residence when she returned home at 11 p.m. On July 31, he waited in the lobby again for her to come home. When he saw her entering the lobby with friends, he approached her and asked to speak with her. Feeling harassed and threatened, the woman asked her friends to call the police and returned to her residence out of fear for her safety.
Shortly after, the man created a group chat with himself, the woman, and her friends, sending them threatening messages. He also privately messaged the woman, demanding an apology for her action of involving her friends and calling the police.
The situation took a violent turn when, a few days later, the man ambushed the woman in her residence’s lift lobby. He restrained her by putting his arm around her neck, preventing her from entering the lift. When the woman attempted to free herself and fell, the man used a taser to stun her. She called her roommates for help, and a scuffle ensued. The man tried to seize her phone, but her roommates managed to detain him and called the police.
Approximately two hours later, the woman went to Changi General Hospital, where she discovered abrasions on her limbs and redness on her neck.
The unemployed man pleaded guilty to one count each of stalking the woman and assaulting and using criminal force on her. On October 11, 2023, he was sentenced to two months and six weeks in jail. A gag order is in place to protect the woman’s identity.
