The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the city revealed the driver’s identity as Zhanyuan Yang on Thursday. The office stated in an email that it had no additional information to disclose at this time.
The unsettling event unfolded when Yang intentionally rammed a vehicle into the visa office of the Chinese consulate. A witness at the scene reported that the driver appeared to be bleeding from the head as he emerged from the vehicle, shouting about the C.C.P., an abbreviation for the Chinese Communist Party.
San Francisco police swiftly responded to the scene and engaged the driver, ultimately shooting him. The driver was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
While the exact circumstances of the shooting and the number of officers involved have not been disclosed, there have been no reports of any individuals inside the building being injured as a result of the incident.
As of Monday, the police remained uncertain about the motive behind the driver’s actions and the reason for crashing into the consulate. The Chinese consulate is situated in a residential neighborhood adjacent to a major street, adding to the intrigue surrounding the incident.
