10-7-2023 (BEIJING) A suspect has been arrested in connection with a stabbing at a kindergarten in Lianjiang county, Guangdong province, China, on Monday (Jul 10) that resulted in the deaths of six people and left one wounded. The victims included a teacher, two parents, and three students. The city government spokesperson confirmed the arrest but did not provide details about the victims’ identities, ages, or the weapon used in the attack. The assault occurred at around 7.40 am, and police apprehended a 25-year-old man at approximately 8 am. The police have classified the incident as “intentional assault” and are investigating the cause.
China has experienced a series of mass stabbings as firearms are strictly controlled in the country. Fatal attacks targeting students and schools have become widespread in recent years, driving authorities to intensify security measures and demand more research into the underlying causes of such violent acts. As of 12.20 pm, the attack was the most discussed topic on Weibo, a popular social media platform, with 130 million views.
Last August, three people were killed and six injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi province. In April 2021, a man with a knife entered a kindergarten in southern China, killing two children and injuring 16 others. In June of the previous year, a knife-wielding attacker wounded 37 students and two adults at a primary school in southern China. In November 2019, a man climbed a kindergarten wall in Yunnan province and sprayed people with a corrosive liquid, injuring 51, mostly students.
That same year, a 40-year-old man was arrested in central Hubei province in connection with a “school-related criminal case” that killed eight schoolchildren and injured two others. In April 2018, a 28-year-old man killed nine college students and injured 12 others outside their school in Shaanxi province. The attacker later claimed he acted out of revenge after being harassed by a student at the same school.
