5-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Sir James Dyson, founder and chairman of home-appliance giant Dyson, was presented with the Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore) award on Tuesday (July 4) in acknowledgment of his significant contributions to Singapore’s economy.
President Halimah Yacob presented the prestigious award to the 76-year-old British billionaire during a ceremony held at the Istana.
Png Cheong Boon, Chairman of the Economic Development Board (EDB), praised Mr Dyson for his remarkable contributions to Singapore’s economy. Under his leadership, the multinational technology company established its global headquarters and leading manufacturing site in Singapore, thereby bolstering the nation’s position as a hub for innovation, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain excellence.
EDB highlighted the substantial growth of Dyson’s presence in Singapore over the years. Starting with a mere 10 employees in 2007, the company has expanded to a workforce of over 1,400 individuals encompassing its global headquarters, research and development (R&D) center, and advanced manufacturing functions.
Currently, Singapore serves as a critical hub for Dyson’s innovation and advanced manufacturing activities. The company’s leadership team and global functions, including supply chain, manufacturing, finance, IT, and direct retail teams, are based in the country.
The Singapore-based R&D teams have played a pivotal role in the development of cutting-edge products such as the Dyson Airstrait hair straightener and the Dyson 360 Vis Nav intelligent robot cleaner.
Dyson announced plans in 2022 to further expand its teams with over 250 additional engineers. In early 2023, the company also unveiled its intention to establish a next-generation battery manufacturing facility in Singapore, marking its most significant advanced manufacturing investment to date.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr Dyson remarked that Singapore values engineers and technology-centric companies that invest in the future. He added that the country’s ambitious spirit resonates deeply with Dyson.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious award today, which serves as a testament to the remarkable ingenuity of the Dyson team in Singapore and the unwavering support we have received from the Singapore Government, particularly the EDB,” Mr Dyson stated.
The Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore) award, initiated by the EDB in 1998, recognizes senior executives for their exceptional contributions to Singapore’s economic growth. Between 1998 and 2022, a total of 47 senior business executives nominated by EDB have been conferred with this distinguished award.
