25-5-2023 (Singapore) Airline food has long been the butt of jokes, but Singapore Airlines (SIA) has come under particular scrutiny in recent months over the quality of its economy class meals. However, the airline has announced the return of some aspects of the in-flight dining experience, with appetisers set to make a comeback.
Since travel resumed after the pandemic, netizens have criticised the national carrier for the quality of its economy class meals. A paper service ware trial in March only served to fuel the debate around the presentation of the airline’s food, while a Reddit thread in April called into question the “downgraded” quality of SIA’s economy class meals.
The complaints have grown increasingly pronounced, with some social media users highlighting the perceived disparity between SIA’s annual profit of S$2.16bn (US$1.63bn) and the quality of its in-flight meals. In response, many have called for “better quality meals with classier packaging,” as well as the reinstatement of “all the other pre-pandemic perks.”
SIA’s decision to reintroduce some aspects of the in-flight dining experience may be seen as a response to these complaints. The airline has stated that it is bringing back appetisers for economy class meals, which may help to improve the quality of the dining experience.
