26-6-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The only survivor of the recent fatal military training incident at the Syed Sirajuddin Camp in Gemas, Corporal Udara Khairuzaman Lokman, is now in stable condition, according to a statement from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). The 35-year-old trainer, who hails from Kluang and works at the Sendayan Air Force base, is receiving close monitoring at the Segamat Hospital in Johor.
The incident, which occurred during a shooting and grenade handling training session at the Basic Grenade Training Centre, resulted in the deaths of two RMAF personnel. Trainee Mohd Iqmal Masdi, 22, died on the spot, while Corporal Udara Syuib Bidin, 33, passed away later that evening at the Segamat Hospital. Both men were also stationed at the Sendayan base. Another trainer injured in the incident is still receiving treatment at the hospital.
The RMAF and police are conducting separate investigations into the incident, with the RMAF stating that an Investigation Board would be set up to identify its cause. The RMAF has expressed deep regret for the tragedy and vowed to provide support to the affected families, including arranging the funerals of the victims.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has also offered his condolences to the families of Corporal Mohd Syuib Bidin and Lieutenant Mohd Iqmal Masdi on his Facebook page, stating that the soldiers had fallen during training to defend the country. He urged the family members to be given strength and perseverance in accepting their fate.
The RMAF has urged everyone not to speculate on the incident until the investigation process has been completed and to respect the sensitivity of the families involved.
