256-2023 (JAKARTA) President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has reiterated his government’s commitment to advancing the principles set forth by Indonesia’s founder and first president, Soekarno. Speaking at the 2023 Bung Karno Month (BBK) commemoration event at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jokowi emphasized the importance of implementing and developing Soekarno’s ideas for the nation.
Marking the birth anniversary of Soekarno, who was affectionately referred to as Bung Karno by Indonesians, is not simply a time for celebration but a time to reaffirm the commitment to implementing his teachings on nation-building, Jokowi said.
Soekarno’s contributions to Indonesia extend beyond his role as an independence fighter and the proclamator of Indonesia’s independence. He also formulated Indonesia’s ideology, Pancasila, and was instrumental in shaping the country’s governance, democracy, and progress, according to Jokowi.
Describing Soekarno as an “enlightener of the world,” Jokowi highlighted his efforts to fight for the independence of nations and promote justice globally. The first president also guided the struggle of the Indonesian nation, Jokowi added.
Calling on citizens to help develop Indonesia into a great nation and a “lighthouse that shines its brilliance upon the world,” Jokowi emphasized the importance of maintaining Indonesia’s political sovereignty, economic self-reliance, and cultural identity.
