20-9-2023 (MANILA) The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in the Philippines has implemented new guidelines aimed at putting an end to the practice of fraudulent Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card registrations, commonly referred to as “monkey” registrations.
NTC Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez recently informed senators that her office issued a memorandum order (MO) on Monday, ushering in a significant change in the SIM card registration process. The new requirement mandates that individuals registering a SIM card must provide a live selfie photo as part of the registration process.
“We issued an MO yesterday, so it’s effective immediately…” Lopez stated during a discussion on the proposed 2024 budget of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), with NTC being an attached agency of the DICT.
