31-12-2023 (MANILA) The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) remains resolute in upholding Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea against China, as it strengthens its engagements with various nations to enhance its capabilities.
A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by Global Times, described as “China’s national English language newspaper, under the People’s Daily,” featured a response from Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian regarding a “French plan to hold joint patrols with the Philippines in the South China Sea and a joint drill between the Philippines and India in the region.”
Wu emphasized that the maritime dispute between China and the Philippines is a bilateral issue, insisting that no third party should interfere. He stated, “The China-Philippines maritime dispute is an issue between the two countries, and no third party has any right to interfere.”
In light of Wu’s comments, PCG Commodore Jay Tarriela defended the Philippines’ decision to engage in military collaborations with other nations to enhance its capabilities.
Tarriela expressed, “By forging military partnerships with countries that uphold the rules-based order, the Philippines not only prevents China’s dominance but also deters its unlawful bullying and aggressive behavior.” He conveyed his sentiments through a post on X.
He further highlighted France’s intention to conduct joint patrols, stating that it not only demonstrates their support for the Philippines but also strengthens their claim that an increasing number of nations recognize the legal basis for asserting sovereignty and sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea, in contrast to China’s baseless 10-dash line claim.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan echoed the importance of forging stronger partnerships with foreign counterparts in a separate statement. He emphasized the significance of collaborations with nations such as the United States, Japan, Australia, Republic of Korea, and Germany in developing the PCG into a world-class maritime organization dedicated to safeguarding the seas.
