31-12-2023 (MANILA) China issued stern warnings against the Philippines on Friday over plans to construct a permanent civilian facility at the disputed Ayungin Shoal in the South China Sea.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused the Philippines of “infringing on China’s sovereignty” and violating a 2002 regional conduct declaration by seeking to replace a grounded wartime ship with a new structure at the shoal.
Philippine military officials previously indicated budget funding is allocated in 2024 to build lodgings at Ayungin to house both troops and fishermen. The move aims to reinforce Manila’s claims in its exclusive economic zone.
But Beijing asserts such construction would breach promises to keep the shoal uninhabited. “China will take resolute measures against any violation of our sovereignty,” Mao asserted.
The verbal clash highlights rising South China Sea tensions. Ayungin, part of the contested Spratly Islands, lies just 100 miles from Philippines shores but China encroaches nearby. Manila consequently plans a stronger footprint.
Beijing’s sharp rhetoric underscores its sensitivity regarding military infrastructure in disputed waters where it aggressively asserts its claims. But Philippine leaders argue occupation and expansionism also violate accords.
With Chinese shadowing of Philippine vessels increasing, Manila believes civilians alongside troops can strengthen its position. But China threatens consequences for any perceived provocation.
