24-11-2023 (DUBLIN) Chaos erupted in Dublin as a knife attack left five people injured, including three young children, triggering riots and public disorder. The motives behind the attack remain unclear, with police not ruling out any possibilities, including terrorism.
The incident unfolded near O’Connell Street, a major thoroughfare, leading to the suspension of public transport and a caution to avoid a nearby maternity hospital. Anti-immigrant protesters clashed with riot police at the crime scene, resulting in a burnt double-decker bus, vandalized businesses, and looting.
Dublin, unaccustomed to such violence, witnessed scenes described by Police Commissioner Drew Harris as perpetrated by a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology.” The unprecedented rioting prompted the deployment of 400 officers to restore order, with a police car set ablaze during the clashes.
Despite Dublin lacking far-right political representation, small anti-immigrant protests have increased recently. The government is now reviewing parliamentary security after lawmakers were trapped during a previous protest.
While initial reports suggested a non-terror-related motive, Police Commissioner Harris emphasized an open investigation. A five-year-old girl sustained serious injuries, with a man in his late 40s, believed to be the attacker, arrested for serious injuries. Two other children and a woman in her 30s were also injured.
Eyewitness Anthony Boyle described scenes of “pandemonium,” with the public intervening early in the attack. In the aftermath, around 50 anti-immigrant protesters breached police barriers, leading to further clashes and escalating violence. Police refrained from commenting on the nationality of the detained man.
Ireland’s recent surge in net migration, reaching its second-highest level, and the influx of Ukrainian refugees have heightened tensions. Justice Minister Helen McEntee denounced the violence as an attempt by “thugs” to exploit the situation and sow division, emphasizing the authorities’ commitment to restoring order.
