21-12-2023 (GAZA) The Israeli military has announced the discovery of a complex network of underground tunnels utilized by Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip. Among the notable findings is the alleged hideout of the mastermind behind the October 7 raid on Israel.
According to reports from Reuters and Agence France-Presse, the Israeli army released a video on Wednesday, December 20, showcasing “a vast network of tunnels connecting terrorist hideouts, offices, and residential apartments belonging to Hamas’ senior leadership.”
Israeli army spokesman Lerner revealed that these tunnels were unearthed by Israeli soldiers while they were in control of the center of Gaza City in recent days. Of particular interest is an underground tunnel near Palestine Square in Gaza City, which was reportedly occupied by “senior Hamas officials, including Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Mohammed Deif, commander of Hamas’s Qassam Brigades, among others, who used it to orchestrate their operations.”
Yahya Sinwar, the supreme leader of Hamas, and Mohammed Deif have been accused of masterminding the October 7 attack on Israel. The Israeli army has released images showcasing the intricacies of these tunnels, which are accessible up to 20 meters underground via spiral stairs and elevators. The tunnels are equipped with electricity, water pipes, surveillance cameras, and heavy-duty blast doors, as depicted in the photographs provided by the Israeli army.
The discovery of this underground network sheds light on the extensive infrastructure utilized by Hamas leaders within the Gaza Strip. It underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Israeli forces in combatting the activities of militant groups in the region. The Israeli military’s ability to uncover and expose this network serves as a significant blow to Hamas and its operational capabilities.
As the situation unfolds, Israeli authorities continue to prioritize the safety and security of their nation, actively working to dismantle the infrastructure that supports Hamas’ activities. The implications of this recent discovery are expected to have a lasting impact on the dynamics within the Gaza Strip and the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
