22-6-2023 (HONG KONG) Stephen Chow Sing-chi, renowned actor, comedian, and filmmaker, marked his 61st birthday today with a delightful surprise for his fans. In a heartwarming gesture, fellow Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung sent him a special video message, accompanied by a hand-drawn matchstick man and an old photo capturing cherished memories from their time filming the classic comedy “King of Comedy.”
However, it was Chow’s own birthday present to himself that truly captured public attention. He took to social media to announce the completion of the script for his latest cinematic venture, titled “Shaolin Women’s Soccer.” This highly anticipated film will also mark his return to the director’s chair, following his last directorial effort in 2019 with “The New King of Comedy.”
Chow’s announcement carried further excitement as he revealed that “Shaolin Women’s Soccer” is set to be an international production. As part of his ambitious vision, he called for a global talent search, specifically seeking out young women who possess a unique combination of talent, intelligence, and physical prowess. Stressing the importance of authenticity, Chow expressed his desire to avoid photo editing and false representations, making it clear that only genuine applicants who meet the specified criteria will be considered.
Chris, Chow’s trusted assistant, confirmed that the talent search would be conducted via email, with additional details to be disclosed at a later date. When asked about Cecilia Cheung’s potential involvement in the project, considering her previous collaboration with Chow in “Shaolin Soccer,” Chris indicated that the focus currently lies on the talent search, while finalizing the film’s production details remains a priority.
Stephen Chow, born in Hong Kong in 1962, has an extraordinary personal journey. His given name, “Sing-chi,” pays homage to a celebrated poet from the Tang Dynasty. Following his parents’ divorce, Chow was raised by his mother and attended Heep Woh Primary School. At the tender age of nine, he found inspiration in Bruce Lee’s martial arts masterpiece, “The Big Boss,” fueling his dream to become a martial arts star. Subsequently, he pursued his studies at San Marino Secondary School and secured admission to TVB’s esteemed acting classes upon graduation.
In 2013, Chow achieved another notable milestone by being elected as a member of the 11th Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
