26-6-2023 (MANILA) Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who previously criticized Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as a “spoiled” and “weak leader” during the election campaign, has now praised President Marcos’ first year in office as “good.” Duterte expressed his positive views on the current administration during a reunion with former officials and supporters in San Juan.
Duterte highlighted the perceived governance and peace under President Marcos’ leadership, stating, “The governance is so good. There is no disorder, we are at peace almost, and you have to credit it to the present administration. What we are seeing during his time is very good.” However, Duterte chose not to comment on the controversial Maharlika Investment Fund, which has raised concerns and controversies.
Before leaving office, Duterte called for unity and support for the incoming administration, emphasizing the need to confront national issues without engaging in divisive politics. In a televised meeting with officials in June last year, he urged Filipinos to avoid activities that would further divide the country.
It is worth noting that Duterte did not publicly endorse Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the election, despite his alliance with the Marcos family. Marcos ran as a candidate alongside Duterte’s daughter, Sara Duterte, who eventually became the Vice President of the Philippines.
