13-1-2024 (TAIPEI) In today’s Taiwan Presidential Election and Legislative Yuan Elections, both Kuomintang presidential candidate Hou You-ih and People’s Party presidential candidate Ko Wen-je have graciously conceded defeat. Meanwhile, Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate William Lai Ching-te has confidently declared his victory.
Ko Wen-je, in a heartfelt concession speech, acknowledged the transient nature of election fervor while underscoring the enduring love for Taiwan. Addressing his supporters, he stated, “Because you are the future of our nation and the continued goal of Ko Wen-je and the People’s Party, the People’s Party has become a crucial force.”
Expressing optimism for the future, Ko Wen-je proclaimed, “We only have one Taiwan, and we must save it ourselves. In the next decade, we can gain more recognition and reclaim this country.” He highlighted the beauty of democracy, where ideals can be realized, and outlined the past decade as a social movement dedicated to transforming Taiwanese politics, whether in governance or elections.
Ko Wen-je affirmed that the movement is ongoing, stating, “We have taken the first step towards victory. In four years, we will still cast our votes for Ko Wen-je and the People’s Party.”
At 8 pm, Hou You-ih gracefully announced his defeat, expressing respect for the Taiwanese people’s choice. He extended his apologies for not achieving a party alternation and congratulated both Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim. Hou urged the winners not to disappoint the Taiwanese people’s expectations.
Emphasizing the importance of responsive leadership, Hou acknowledged the intensity of the election and expressed hope that all parties can unite for a stronger, more unified Taiwan post-election.
