11-1-2024 (WASHINGTON) Boeing, the American aerospace company, is currently conducting an intensive investigation into the recent aviation incident that occurred on January 5. The company’s CEO, Dave Calhoun, stated that they are determined to uncover the root cause of the incident and determine what went wrong in their processes. In an interview with CNBC, Calhoun referred to the problem as a “quality escape” and emphasized the need to identify the breakdown in their inspections and original work that led to the incident.
The incident involved an Alaska Airlines flight, which managed to execute an emergency landing without any fatalities or major injuries. A panel known as a “door plug” detached from the aircraft, resulting in a gaping hole in its side and the sudden depressurization of the cabin. Disturbing video footage captured oxygen masks dangling inside the aircraft.
Calhoun, who is committed to maintaining complete transparency, described the incident as a “horrible escape” and stressed the importance of a thorough investigation. He expressed that such an event should never happen again in the future.
In response to the incident, US regulators have grounded 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 planes that have the same configuration as the aircraft involved in the incident. Both United Airlines and Alaska Airlines reported finding loose hardware on some of their Boeing 737 Max 9 planes during preliminary inspections conducted after the incident.
This incident is another significant blow to Boeing, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years. The company has been grappling with the aftermath of two fatal crashes involving its 737 Max aircraft in 2018 and 2019, which led to a global grounding of the model.
