16-3-2024 (JAKARTA) A tragic incident occurred as a member of Basarnas lost his life while attempting to rescue an individual contemplating suicide from the top of the BTS tower in Jayapura. The deceased officer, identified as Tri Sudarmo, was a part of the rescue team stationed at the Jayapura Search and Rescue (SAR) Office.
In a statement released on Thursday (14/3), the Head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) conveyed condolences on behalf of the entire Basarnas Family for the loss of Tri Sudarmo.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday (13/3) when Tri Sudarmo heroically intervened to save a person in distress atop the BTS tower. Tragically, he fell from the towering structure, which stands at a height of 75 meters.
The sequence of events unfolded as the Basarnas team responded to evacuate residents who were inebriated and contemplating jumping from the tower. Equipped with necessary gear and ropes, the team ascended the tower with the aim of rescuing the individuals in distress.
Successfully reaching the intoxicated residents, who had fallen asleep due to their inebriation, the team began the process of lowering them to safety using ropes. However, amidst the descent, one of the residents awoke, causing a disturbance. In the ensuing chaos, the safety ropes securing both the residents and Basarnas members were severed, resulting in a tragic fall from a height of 15 meters.

Tri Sudarmo succumbed to fatal injuries sustained in the fall, while miraculously, the individual contemplating suicide survived.
