7-6-2023 (BANGKOK) A 22-year-old Malaysian woman, Chong Sum Yee, also known as Angie, has gone missing after visiting a river pier on the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Sai district, according to official sources.
The sources revealed that Angie checked into a hotel near the Mae Sai border checkpoint on May 29. The following day, she was captured on surveillance camera footage sitting in the hotel lobby. A friendly interaction took place between Angie and a woman dressed in white, after which they left the hotel together.
On the same day, Angie was seen riding as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle heading towards the border in tambon Koh Chang. Officials have located the woman motorcyclist who provided information that Angie paid her 500 baht to take her to a border pier in tambon Koh Chang. However, the motorcyclist was unsure if Angie crossed the border into Myanmar.
The signal from Angie’s mobile phone was last detected at the border in tambon Koh Chang, and it is suspected that she may have entered Myanmar through an unofficial crossing point. Thai officials have reached out to their counterparts in Myanmar, requesting assistance in locating the missing woman. They are currently awaiting an official complaint from Angie’s family.
Angie’s mother, known as Caiyun, has arrived in Thailand from Kuala Lumpur. On Wednesday, she filed a missing person report with the tourist police in Mae Sai district. Caiyun expressed concern that her daughter, who had arrived in Chiang Mai province, might have been lured across the border into Myanmar. She mentioned that she received a message on Angie’s LINE chat account assuring her not to worry, but she doubts its authenticity as there have been no further communications from her daughter.
Caiyun is currently staying in Mae Sai district with her interpreter, anxiously awaiting any information regarding her daughter’s whereabouts. The authorities are actively investigating the case and coordinating efforts with Myanmar officials to locate Angie and ensure her safe return.
