8-4-2024 (HANOI) Southeast Asia grappled with a staggering 43 million local cybersecurity threats targeting businesses in 2023, reveals data from global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.
Vietnam bore the brunt of these attacks, enduring 17.1 million incidents, followed closely by Indonesia with 14.6 million and Thailand with 4.7 million. Singapore, though experiencing a 67% surge in local incidents, reported the lowest numbers in the region, escalating from 300,000 in 2022 to 500,000 in 2023.
These statistics, delving into local infections of user computers, serve as vital benchmarks in gauging the prevailing cyber threat landscape. They encompass objects infiltrating target computers through infected files or removable media, as well as those initially accessing the system in non-open formats, such as complex installers or encrypted files.
Adrian Hia, Kaspersky’s Managing Director for Asia Pacific, underscored Southeast Asia’s burgeoning potential as a global manufacturing hub and its consistent digital economic growth. However, he cautioned that sustaining these achievements hinges on fortifying cyber defenses against increasingly sophisticated attacks employing conventional tactics.
Combatting local threats necessitates robust security measures, including security solutions adept at treating infected objects, firewalls, anti-rootkit functionality, and control over removable devices. By implementing comprehensive security protocols, organizations can effectively thwart the proliferation of malware via files or removable media.
