11-3-2024 (BANGKOK) In a startling incident, a Chinese traveller has been apprehended and charged with theft for allegedly stealing a Rolex watch and $2,800 in cash from another passenger during a Vistara flight (UK123) from Mumbai to Bangkok.
The arrest was confirmed by Kittipong Kittikachorn, the general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, who stated that the 48-year-old suspect, Yi Xiangyang, had been detained and is now facing charges related to the alleged theft.
The victim, identified as Indian passenger Hasaad Shawan, filed a complaint with Suvarnabhumi Airport police upon disembarking the flight, reporting the theft of his valuable belongings. Airport authorities swiftly examined security camera footage, leading them to identify Mr Yi as the prime suspect in the case.
According to airport officials, Mr Yi hurriedly left the airport via taxi after completing immigration, carrying only carry-on luggage and not waiting to collect any additional bags from the plane.
Authorities from the tourist police traced Mr Yi to a hotel on Ratchadaphisek Road, where he was subsequently arrested. The specific timing of his arrest has not been disclosed.
If found guilty, Mr Yi faces charges of theft on board an aircraft, a offence carrying a fine ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 baht, and/or a potential prison sentence of one to seven years.
