13-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) President Halimah Yacob, in her farewell speech at the Istana on Wednesday (Sep 13), emphasized the importance of unity and staying united for Singaporeans to overcome the challenges faced by the small and open economy. Reflecting on the COVID-19 years, she commended the Singaporean people for adhering to safe distancing rules and supporting one another during the pandemic.
Madam Halimah acknowledged that the government alone could not have steered Singapore out of the crisis, highlighting the need for unity and purpose in an era marked by shifting geopolitical alliances, economic rivalries, climate change, and an aging population.
The conclusion of Mdm Halimah’s six-year term as President was marked on Wednesday. Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who secured a resounding 70.4 percent of the vote share in the recent election, will be sworn in as President at the Istana on Thursday. In an interview with CNA last month, Mdm Halimah revealed that her decision not to stand for re-election was driven primarily by her desire to retire.
Expressing gratitude, Mdm Halimah remarked that she was humbled by the trust and faith bestowed upon her by the people of Singapore. She considered it a privilege to have been their voice, to have listened to their concerns, and to have worked tirelessly on their behalf.
As Singapore’s first female President, Mdm Halimah recognized the unique opportunity she had to inspire other women and girls. She acknowledged the positive impact her presidency had on empowering women in Singapore and pushing the boundaries of their potential.
While serving as President, Mdm Halimah focused on creating a more caring, compassionate, and just society. She highlighted the success of initiatives such as the President’s Challenge, which raised substantial funds to assist communities in need and empower them beyond mere assistance. The Empowering for Life Fund, launched in 2018, has also made a positive and significant impact by supporting programs that promote skills upgrading, capacity-building, and employment opportunities for disadvantaged individuals and families.
Diplomacy played a crucial role in Mdm Halimah’s presidency. Her numerous overseas visits, including state visits, served to enhance Singapore’s international image, strengthen bilateral ties, and create new economic opportunities for Singaporean companies. Mdm Halimah expressed her gratitude to Singaporeans living abroad, recognizing their contributions and their role in showcasing Singapore’s commitment to meritocracy and diversity.
In terms of her relationship with the government, Mdm Halimah described it as “good,” based on mutual trust, respect, and a clear understanding of each other’s roles and responsibilities. She emphasized that her queries and requests for information were always taken seriously, allowing her to carry out her duties independently.
