13-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has lauded outgoing President Halimah Yacob for her commitment to being a “President for everyone,” acknowledging her profound impact on Singapore during her tenure. Speaking at a farewell reception at the Istana, Mr. Lee reminisced about President Halimah’s promise when she was elected in 2017 and highlighted her dedication to expanding opportunities for all citizens, fostering inclusivity, and promoting gender equality.
Mr. Lee commended President Halimah’s efforts to challenge gender stereotypes and her advocacy for gender equality. As Singapore’s first female President, she used her personal experiences to inspire women and encourage them to break barriers.
Furthermore, President Halimah actively championed the rights of those with disabilities and showed concern for mental health issues, particularly among Singapore’s youth. She visited social welfare agencies to gain insights into the challenges faced by people with disabilities and encouraged greater acceptance and understanding among employers and the general public.
President Halimah’s commitment extended to supporting youth through the “Supporting Youth in Community” programme, providing psychosocial support to young individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Her strong ties with the labor movement also led her to advocate for workers’ interests, with a particular focus on lower-wage workers. President Halimah’s career began as an industrial relations officer with NTUC in 1978, and she later served as deputy secretary-general of the congress from 2007 to 2011.
In addition to her contributions in various areas, President Halimah played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic. As Singapore’s President, she held the “second key” to the country’s reserves and exercised her duty extensively to support the economy and jobs during the crisis. This involved approving multiple draws on the reserves, amounting to approximately S$40 billion out of the approved S$69 billion between 2020 and 2022. Mr. Lee noted that this was the largest amount drawn since the establishment of the “second key” system.
President Halimah’s support enabled the government to swiftly respond to the pandemic, saving lives, stabilizing the economy, preserving jobs, and ensuring Singapore emerged more resilient. Mr. Lee also expressed gratitude to President Halimah’s husband, Mr. Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, for his vital role in supporting her throughout her presidency.
As President Halimah concludes her term, Prime Minister Lee acknowledged her remarkable career in public service and her role as Singapore’s head of state, thanking her for her service to the nation and wishing her and her husband all the best in their future endeavors.
