26-12-2023 (PHILADELPHIA) A six-year-old boy’s first solo flight to visit his grandmother before Christmas took an unexpected turn when a US airline mistakenly flew him to the wrong airport, approximately 270km away from his intended destination.
Maria Ramos, the boy’s grandmother, recounted the distressing ordeal to US news outlet Wink News. Her anticipation of reuniting with her grandson, Casper, at Southwest Florida International Airport on December 21 turned into sheer horror when she was informed that he had not boarded the plane, despite his luggage arriving.
“They told me, ‘No, he’s not on this flight. He missed his flight,'” shared Ms Ramos, who did not disclose her age.
However, Ms Ramos possessed a check-in tag that indicated Casper had indeed entered Philadelphia International Airport.
She rushed into the plane and approached a flight attendant, asking, “Where’s my grandson? He was handed over to you at Philadelphia.” The flight attendant responded, “No, I had no kids with me.”
Fear gripped Ms Ramos as she anxiously awaited answers, but relief came when Casper called her on the phone.
“He said, ‘Mum, where are you? I don’t see you, I got out of the plane.’ I said, ‘What do you mean you got out of the plane?’ He said, ‘Yes, I’m here, I’ve landed, I’m at the airport,'” recounted Ms Ramos.
It then dawned on her that the young boy had indeed landed in the correct state, but he found himself in Orlando, a four-hour car ride away from her location.
Ms Ramos stated that budget carrier Spirit Airlines has offered to reimburse her undisclosed travel expenses, but her primary concern is understanding how her grandson ended up at the wrong airport.
“I want them to call me. Let me know how my grandson ended up in Orlando. How did that happen? Did they get him off the plane? Did the flight attendant – after mom handed him with paperwork – did she let him go and he jumped on the wrong plane by himself?” demanded Ms Ramos.
In a statement, the airline assured Wink News that they are investigating the incident and how the mix-up occurred.
They stated, “The child was always under the care and supervision of a Spirit Team Member, and as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family and reconnect them… We apologize to the family for this experience.”
According to the New York Post, the incident took place on a day when holiday travel was at its peak, as reported by the US Federal Aviation Administration. With nearly 50,000 flights taking off across the US on December 21, airports were bustling with travelers embarking on their holiday journeys.
In an attempt to lift Casper’s spirits at the airport, Ms Ramos likened the experience to a Christmas adventure, similar to the storyline of the popular film “Home Alone 2,” where the young protagonist also boards the wrong flight. However, for Casper, the incident was more of a misadventure, and he expressed his reluctance to ever fly alone again.
