26-12-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) In the wake of a controversial episode on a Taiwanese reality show, Malaysian actor-host Hero Tai Zu Xiong has issued an apology for remarks made about Singapore. The 37-year-old clarified the context of the contentious episode, which centered on a ‘Singapore versus Malaysia’ theme.
Speaking to TNP on Monday (Dec 25), Tai explained that the show’s producers intended to create verbal sparring between participants from both countries. The episode, titled Students Coming, featured guests from Singapore and Malaysia discussing their respective nations.
Tai, who has resided in Taiwan for 12 years, emphasized that the entire episode aimed at entertaining viewers by showcasing a scripted rivalry. However, he acknowledged that the editing process had portrayed him as dissatisfied with Singapore.
He clarified, “It looked like I was very dissatisfied with Singapore, but it was really just a performance to suit the entertainment programme.”
In the controversial episode, Tai suggested that visitors spend only two to three days in Singapore due to it being “too boring.” He proceeded to mock iconic attractions like Jewel’s Rain Vortex, Siloso Beach, and Gardens by the Bay, dismissing them as “man-made.”
The controversy peaked when Tai claimed, “All of Singapore’s delicacies are all stolen from Malaysia,” asserting that dishes like chicken rice, char kway teow, bak kut teh, nyonya kueh, barley drink, and crab originated in Malaysia.
Netizens engaged in a heated debate, with criticism directed at Tai for seeking fame and making inflammatory comments. Some, however, acknowledged the entertainment factor and suggested that viewers not take it too seriously.
Tai revealed that he received numerous messages from Singaporean netizens, expressing unhappiness and, in some cases, resorting to insults and curses. Addressing the negative reactions, Tai said, “I hope that both the Internet and the real world can be filled with more love and peace. I sincerely apologise to any Singaporeans whom I’ve upset.”
During a discussion on Singapore livestreaming platform Star Live, Tai and co-founder Terence Cao highlighted the tendency of netizens to react based on headlines without understanding the full context.
Looking ahead, Tai expressed his commitment to remaining true to himself and focusing on future performances. He emphasized his dedication to his role as an artist and the pursuit of quality work.
