20-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) In a significant move to advance “chiplet” technology, Singapore-based Silicon Box inaugurated its state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing foundry on Thursday. The startup, founded just two years ago, aims to revolutionize the chip industry with its innovative approach.
According to a statement by Silicon Box, the expansive 73,000-square meter factory is expected to generate over 1,000 job opportunities, backed by support from Singapore’s Economic Development Board.
The brainchild of Sehat Sutardja and Weili Dai, co-founders of U.S. chipmaker Marvell, and current CEO BJ Han, Silicon Box focuses on “chiplets” – minuscule chips that can be as small as a grain of sand. These chiplets are assembled using advanced packaging techniques, a cost-effective method that consolidates tiny semiconductors into a single processor capable of powering a diverse range of applications, from data centers to household appliances.
With the global chip industry grappling with soaring manufacturing costs in the quest to create ever-smaller transistors measured in atoms, the adoption of chiplet technology has garnered widespread interest in recent years.
