24-10-2023 (LONDON) Kensington Palace announced on Tuesday (Oct 24) that Prince William will be travelling to Singapore in November to attend the annual Earthshot Prize ceremony. The prestigious award grants £1 million (US$1.22 million) to five winners who have developed innovative solutions to address environmental challenges.
As the eldest son of King Charles and the heir to the throne, Prince William will join activists, policymakers, and innovators at the award ceremony on Nov 7. During his four-day trip, he is also expected to participate in various events alongside businesses, investors, and the finalists and winners of the prize.
This year, the 15 finalists represent a diverse range of initiatives, including a project in Liberia that focuses on planting, growing, and digitally tracking trees, as well as proposals for a more environmentally friendly approach to treating industrial wastewater.
According to Kensington Palace, Prince William plans to engage with the local community in Singapore, learning about the efforts made by local organizations to protect and restore the planet. These efforts span various areas such as combating the illegal wildlife trade, preserving rainforests, and nurturing and promoting cutting-edge innovations.
In addition to the Earthshot Prize ceremony, Prince William will also attend the United for Wildlife Global summit. The United for Wildlife initiative was launched by Prince William and the Royal Foundation in 2014, with the aim of combating the illegal wildlife trade.
Last month, Prince William attended the UN General Assembly and held discussions with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the urgent actions required to combat climate change and safeguard the environment, as stated by the United Nations.
This visit to Singapore will mark Prince William’s first trip to the country in over a decade, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
