18-2-2025 (MANILA) A young couple, both aged 25, lost their lives in a devastating collision involving a police mobile unit on Marcos Highway, Antipolo City, during treacherous weather conditions on Monday afternoon.
The fatal incident occurred in Barangay Inarawan when a police patrol vehicle lost control on the rain-slicked highway, colliding with an oncoming motorcycle and subsequently involving a jeepney, according to Police Captain Alnor Tagara, Investigation and Operations Chief of Antipolo Component City Police Station (CCPS).
“The patrol vehicle was travelling towards Boso-Boso when it lost control during heavy rainfall, veering into the opposing lanes where the motorcycle and jeepney were heading towards Cogeo,” explained Capt. Tagara. “The impact propelled the motorcycle backwards into an approaching jeepney.”
Whilst the jeepney sustained frontal damage, its driver and passengers emerged unscathed. First responders from the Barangay Inarawan medical team reported that both motorcycle riders suffered severe head trauma. “The male victim also sustained a possible left leg fracture, whilst the female had a suspected right arm fracture. Both showed no vital signs upon assessment,” said Louie Cornel, a Barangay Inarawan medic.
In a poignant detail that adds to the tragedy, authorities revealed that the male victim had celebrated his birthday just the day before the incident.
The police officer driving the patrol vehicle, currently held at the Antipolo Component City Police Station custodial facility, faces potential charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide with damage to property. Both the officer and the bereaved families have declined to comment on the incident.
Local authorities maintain that adverse weather conditions played a crucial role in the accident. “The recent rainfall had left the road surface particularly hazardous. Despite the vehicle’s functional brakes, control was lost due to these conditions,” Capt. Tagara stated.
