22-6-2023 (PHNOM PENH) Phnom Penh, the vibrant capital city of Cambodia, became the hub of a significant workshop on “combating fake news for journalists” as the second phase of the initiative, funded by the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund, commenced on Thursday.
The opening ceremony of the two-day workshop witnessed the presence of Cambodian Minister of Information, Khieu Kanharith, who expressed sincere gratitude to China for its generous funding through the LMC Special Fund. Minister Kanharith emphasized the workshop’s importance in empowering journalists to effectively combat the spread of fake news.
“The primary objective of this workshop is to equip information officers and journalists with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges involved in combating fake news,” Minister Kanharith explained.
Throughout the workshop, a lineup of national and international experts will deliver insightful presentations on information and media literacy in the context of the digital age. They will also delve into the intricacies of information verification techniques and highlight the significance of fostering a safe environment on social media platforms.
Sok Siphana, senior advisor to the Cambodian government and chairman of the National Secretariat of Cambodia for the LMC, acknowledged the exceptional support provided by the Chinese government in financing the project’s second phase under the LMC Special Fund.
The LMC Special Fund was established by China in 2016 with the aim of facilitating small and medium-sized cooperation projects proposed by the six LMC countries. Siphana further emphasized that the fund has played a crucial role in promoting sustainable development within the Mekong sub-region.
The Lancang-Mekong countries, comprising China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand, are committed to fostering regional cooperation and mutual growth.
