30-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) Woodlands Checkpoint, one of Singapore’s busiest immigration checkpoints, is set to undergo a major redevelopment starting in 2025. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has announced plans to expand and upgrade the complex to better accommodate the growing number of travelers passing through the checkpoint.
To address the frequent traffic congestion issues faced by commuters, the redevelopment project will be carried out in several phases over the next 10 to 15 years. The first phase, scheduled to be completed by 2032, will include an extension at the Old Woodlands Town Centre (OWTC) and Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE). These enhancements aim to significantly increase the clearance capacity for cargo vehicles, cars, and motorcycles.
Despite the ongoing construction work, Woodlands Checkpoint will remain fully operational throughout the entire process. The ICA has carefully planned the redevelopment to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations. The subsequent phases of the expansion project will involve the construction of additional clearance facilities on both acquired and reclaimed land. The ICA will release further details about these phases at a later date.
Upon completion, Woodlands Checkpoint will be approximately five times its current size. The upgraded complex aims to improve clearance efficiency for all modes of transportation while reducing the average travel time from 60 minutes to just 15 minutes. The implementation of automated systems, such as in-car immigration clearance, will further streamline the process. Additionally, security checks will be conducted away from the main checkpoint building to enhance safety and reduce security risks. The redevelopment will also include the provision of holding areas within the checkpoint premises to prevent traffic congestion from spilling onto surrounding roads.
Woodlands Checkpoint, located in the northern part of Singapore, serves as a crucial gateway for travelers commuting between Singapore and Malaysia. The checkpoint handles a substantial volume of traffic on a daily basis, including both commuters and cargo vehicles. The redevelopment project aims to address the growing demand and improve the overall travel experience for all users.
