10-12-2024 (SINGAPORE) A horrific incident unfolded in broad daylight as a 34-year-old woman lost her life following a stabbing at a hardware shop in Hougang, with police arresting a 42-year-old man in connection with the murder.
The tragic event occurred on Tuesday morning at approximately 11:05 at a shophouse situated in Block 210 Hougang Street 21, adjacent to the bustling Kovan Market and Food Centre. The incident left three individuals hospitalised, including the female victim and a 26-year-old male who sustained stab wounds whilst reportedly attempting to intervene.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailant allegedly stabbed the victim, who was an employee at the hardware shop, multiple times. A fruit stall worker who witnessed the attack reported seeing the suspect inflict “at least seven to eight” stab wounds upon the victim. The witness, who rushed to the scene after hearing an altercation, stated that the victim had been employed at the establishment for between one and two years.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene by responding officers and was found to have sustained injuries during the incident. He was subsequently transported to hospital for treatment. Police investigations have revealed that all parties involved were acquainted with one another, though the nature of their relationship remains unclear.
Law enforcement authorities have announced that the suspect will face murder charges on Thursday, an offence that carries the death penalty under Singapore law.
The crime scene, located on the ground floor of a four-storey building comprising both commercial and residential units, remained cordoned off for several hours. The police presence was substantial, with at least nine officers observed within the restricted area, which encompassed several neighbouring businesses including a fruit stall and a gold shop.
The police cordon was finally lifted at approximately 5:10 PM, after which cleaning staff were observed sanitising the premises, including the area behind the counter where the incident allegedly took place.
