27-11-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A family of three had a terrifying encounter when a herd of six enraged wild elephants trampled their car on Malaysia’s East-West Highway. The incident took place on Sunday (Nov 26) at KM 55, shocking the family who were travelling from Penang to Jertih in Terengganu.
Fortunately, the couple and their 23-year-old son inside the vehicle emerged unharmed. However, their Perodua Axia car suffered significant damage to its front, back, and left side, as confirmed by Gerik District Police Chief Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood on Monday.
Chief Superintendent Zulkifli explained that the 48-year-old father, who was driving the car, encountered the herd just after a bend in the road while heading towards Jeli in Kelantan.
“Inadvertently, the driver collided with an elephant calf, causing it to fall to the ground upon impact,” Chief Superintendent Zulkifli stated. He further noted that the incident occurred during drizzly and misty weather conditions. “Witnessing this, the other elephants rushed towards the car and began trampling it.”
The herd eventually retreated once the calf managed to regain its footing.
Chief Superintendent Zulkifli advised motorists on the highway to exercise caution due to the high likelihood of encountering elephant herds.
