2-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) The carcass of a wild elephant was found floating in the Pahang River near Lubuk, Kampung Besul, sending ripples through the local community. The deceased pachyderm was first spotted by a local fisherman during his routine evening fishing expedition on Wednesday.
The discovery was made by 54-year-old Azman Yusoff, who initially mistook the massive form for a floating log whilst setting his nets in the river between Kampung Besul and Kampung Pulau Mansok at approximately 6 pm.
“At first glance, I thought nothing of it – just another piece of debris carried by the current,” recounted Yusoff. “However, something about its peculiar shape prompted me to investigate further. As I steered my boat closer, I was absolutely gobsmacked to realise I was looking at an elephant.”
Yusoff, a veteran fisherman familiar with the river’s characteristics, suggested the animal may have lost its footing on the riverbank before being swept away by the powerful currents that are typical of the Pahang River during this season.
Given the substantial amount of floating debris present in the waterway and the challenging nature of the situation, Yusoff made the decision to leave the carcass in its position. The incident has raised questions about wildlife safety in the area and the increasing instances of human-wildlife interaction along the river’s course.
