10-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Putrajaya witnessed a significant development on Wednesday as the wife of Mr Daim Zainuddin and their two sons arrived at the headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to cooperate with the agency’s investigations into the former finance minister. The family members were there to provide their statements regarding the ongoing probe against Mr Daim, who is currently the subject of an anti-graft investigation.
Earlier, Mr Daim had accused Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of initiating a “political witch-hunt” against him and warned that he would take appropriate action in due course. However, his wife, Mdm Nai’mah Abdul Khalid, expressed their full cooperation with the agency in a brief statement to the media before entering the MACC premises. She emphasized their commitment to abiding by the law and assisting the investigation as required.
Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, the director of MACC’s Anti-Money Laundering Division, confirmed that the agency had taken statements from the three family members to facilitate investigations under Malaysia’s anti-money laundering laws, as reported by Bernama.
The investigation against Mr Daim was initiated in December based on information obtained from the Pandora Papers, a collection of leaked documents from 2021 that exposed the concealed wealth of global leaders, billionaires, and celebrities who utilized offshore companies to acquire assets such as mansions, private jets, and stakes in various enterprises.
Responding to the revelations from the Pandora Papers, Mr Daim asserted that his business dealings, as exposed in the leaked documents, were legitimate. He maintained that he had been a successful and wealthy businessman long before entering politics, and he asserted that all taxes for his businesses and income had been duly paid.
In the same month, it was reported that the multi-million-dollar Ilham Tower, a prominent commercial building owned by the Daim family, had been seized after Mr Daim refused to disclose his and his family’s financial holdings.
