22-11-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) A viral taste-test video posted by Indonesian influencer Arifi has reignited the long-running rivalry between Malaysia and Indonesia over the region’s most prized durian, after he declared Malaysian Musang King the clear winner. The comparison clip, drew millions of views within hours and triggered heated exchanges among netizens in both countries.
In the video, Arifi presented two Musang King durians sourced from Malaysia and Indonesia. While noting that the Indonesian fruit appeared larger and more symmetrical, he said the real difference emerged only after tasting. He described the Malaysian durian as exceptionally rich, aromatic and layered, praising its natural ripening, full-bodied aroma and signature hint of bitterness. Despite its smaller size and imperfect shape, he said the Malaysian fruit “easily outclassed” its Indonesian counterpart.
The clip rapidly gained traction across social platforms, with supporters from both countries jumping into the debate. Many agreed with Arifi’s assessment, while others pushed back, arguing that Indonesia’s durians have distinct advantages. The exchange comes as Malaysia moves to designate the durian as a national fruit, a proposal recently submitted to the Agriculture Ministry and widely discussed domestically.
With both sides now weighing in on the “king of fruits,” the contest over regional durian supremacy appears far from settled.
