5-1-2024 (HANOI) Vietnam’s lucrative durian export industry is set to reach unprecedented heights, with projections indicating a staggering revenue of US$3.5 billion for the current year. This comes on the heels of a remarkable fivefold surge, catapulting the earnings to over 2 billion dollars in 2023, according to a report released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as reported by local media on Friday (Jan 5).
Dang Phuc Nguyen, the General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association, expressed optimism about the potential for durian exports, stating that the figure could hit $3.5 billion in the ongoing year. He attributed this optimistic outlook to an anticipated surge in durian output, alongside an expansion in planting areas and the issuance of codes for export to China, as highlighted in a report by the Vietnam News.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Phung Duc Tien, added further momentum to these projections, stating that the signing of a protocol on frozen durian exports with China in 2024 could contribute to even greater success in Vietnam’s durian export sector.
Currently, Vietnamese durian finds its way into eight different markets, with China emerging as the dominant player, accounting for a substantial 97 percent of the total export volume. Last year’s figures were nothing short of impressive, as Vietnam’s durian export revenue reached a notable 2.2 billion dollars, constituting nearly 40 percent of the country’s overall fruit and vegetable exports.
