9-3-2024 (HANOI) Vietnam has expressed deep concern over the recent tensions in the East Sea, also known as the South China Sea, particularly regarding the China-Philippines tension surrounding Bai Co May (Second Thomas Shoal). Pham Thu Hang, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the media’s questions on Saturday, emphasizing Vietnam’s stance on the matter.
Hang stated that Vietnam is profoundly concerned about the escalating tension in the East Sea, as it has the potential to disrupt peace, security, and stability in the region. She emphasized the importance of all activities in the area adhering to international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It is crucial to respect the sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction of countries in accordance with the UNCLOS, avoid complicating the situation or escalating tensions, ensure freedom of navigation and overflight, and refrain from using or threatening to use force, Hang emphasized.
Vietnam calls on all parties involved to exercise self-restraint, fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and resolve disputes through peaceful means. Cooperation and commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and cooperation in the East Sea are essential for the region’s overall well-being, added the spokesperson.
The East Sea has been a subject of ongoing territorial disputes, with various countries asserting their claims over the area’s islands, reefs, and waters. Tensions and incidents in the region have raised concerns among neighboring countries and the international community. Vietnam, as a stakeholder in the East Sea, remains committed to upholding international law, promoting peaceful resolutions, and ensuring the security and stability of the region.
