17-10-2023 (HANOI) In the world of restaurant promotions, eating challenges have long been a reliable way to garner attention and entice customers through their doors. A Vietnamese eatery recently embraced this tactic by issuing a challenge to devour two full trays of fried chicken within a mere 90 minutes, with the reward being a substantial 5 million Vietnamese dong (equivalent to approximately S$279).
One tenacious woman, sporting a pink shirt, enthusiastically stepped up to tackle this culinary gauntlet and emerged victorious, nearly finishing both trays within a remarkable 55 minutes. However, instead of celebrating her accomplishment, the restaurant owner responded with playful yet seemingly disapproving comments regarding the potential impact on his establishment’s profits.
The owner jokingly lamented the fact that the prize money would effectively wipe out the day’s earnings, covering expenses such as electricity, water, chicken, and staff salaries. He quipped that the only recourse now was for the customer to promptly regurgitate their feast, all in good humour.
However, this light-hearted banter did not sit well with netizens, who promptly criticized the restaurant owner for his seemingly inappropriate response. Many pointed out that he had established the challenge and its terms, thus making his reaction to the successful participant’s victory puzzling.
The online backlash prompted by the owner’s comments created substantial negative publicity for the restaurant. Yet, some argue that any form of attention, even negative, can be advantageous in the competitive restaurant industry. In this case, TikTok videos featuring the determined pink-shirted contestant’s eating prowess garnered millions of views, vastly surpassing the eatery’s typical video engagement.
