28-7-2023 (MANILA) The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is conducting rescue operations to save the remaining passengers of a vessel that capsized near Manila on Thursday, resulting in the loss of at least 25 lives. The exact number of people on board is unknown, but 40 people have been rescued, and authorities are searching for the remaining six missing people. PCG officials have been seen pulling a body from the choppy waters of Binangonan, where the vessel capsized after being hit by strong winds.
According to the PCG, all passengers panicked and moved to one side of the boat, causing it to capsize. Binangonan, a coastal town, is located just two hours’ drive away from the capital, Manila. The incident occurred after Typhoon Doksuri hit the country, bringing winds of up to 175km an hour to the northern and most populated island of Luzon. Some ferries and boats were allowed to sail after the typhoon left the Philippines. The Philippines has a poor record for maritime safety, with overcrowded vessels, and many ageing ships still in use.
